Quick TakesWhy does the Hollywood crowd think that the Melissa Etheridge face
holding kiss on her same sex partner at the Academy Awards will
resonate with 'fly over' country? (How will it play in Peoria?).
Martin Scorsese directing Jack Nicholson was a must see for me
so I was glad to see
The Departed win an Oscar.
Ouch, My FootIn the common sense free atmosphere of Washington DC the
democrats went wild with plans to take over the conduct of the
war in Iraq. Last week Congress took a break and most congress
folks went back to their home districts for fund raising and maybe
even meeting with constituents. They ran into common sense.
Cut and run was not the ‘mandate’ of the 2006 elections. While
the vote reflected a frustration with the war in Iraq, the message
was 'we want to win but make it quick and get out of there'.
There was not a desire by the voters to exit Iraq under less than
honorable conditions.
Upon returning to Washington the Democrat party pulled
Jack Murtha’s ‘slow bleed’ strategy off the table. They are also
backing away from changing the terms of the 2002 authorization
to invade Iraq. Soon the ether of power will wipe away the
memory of what they heard back home at which time the
democrats will take careful aim and once again shoot themselves
in the foot.
Solid Entertainment!
WaPo - Democrats Back AwayThey Won’t Stop at SmokingWith the many attacks on cigarettes and smokers the precedence
has been established that you can judicate and legislate against
a legal activity and a legal product. Back in the mid 90’s I wrote
(on the now defunct AOL/ABC message boards) that it would be
better to make tobacco illegal. I feared then that the precedents
set would open the door to attacks on other products that were
deemed politically incorrect. When the argument that smoking
products should be taxed and sued to pay for the increased cost of
health care required by tobacco users, I knew that in no time at all
anything deemed unhealthy would be legislated against.
The health issue justified attacks on fast food restaurants.
Some cities have banned trans fats in restaurants.
What happened to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
Political correctness and junk science know no bounds.
The latest attack on our right to the pursuit of happiness is
(are you ready?)
Girl Scout Cookies!A group called
National Action Against Obesity.
(Gee! they make it sound like such a noble cause) is attacking
little girls and the cookie sales that keep their organization
afloat. Why? Because cookies contain fat!
According to
Me Me Roth, president of National Action Against Obesity,
“No civic organization should use junk food as a fund raiser.”
Just how long will it take for a city, a state, or even congress to
codify this quote into law?
My guess is not long.
